The peacebuilding studies department is a specialized academic unit within the center for strategic studies at university of Anbar. It focuses on advancing both theoretical insight and practical applications in peacebuilding, aiming to strengthen social stability in post conflict settings particularly in Al Anbar Governorate within the wider Iraqi and regional environment.
The department was founded in response to the profound security and societal changes experienced by Iraq over recent decades. These transformations generated complex challenges, including violent extremism, the reintegration of affected populations, addressing the long term impacts of conflict, and restoring trust between public institutions and local communities. Accordingly, the department seeks to design evidence based and context sensitive approaches that promote durable community peace, grounded in a nuanced understanding of local social and cultural dynamics.
Adopting an interdisciplinary framework, the department draws on international law, security studies, political science, and sociology to address peacebuilding from a comprehensive perspective. Its core research themes include conflict prevention and early warning systems; community reconciliation and transitional justice; reintegration of returnees and conflict-affected groups; the contribution of local governance to stability; and the intersection of human security and sustainable development.
In addition to academic research, the department actively connects scholarship with policymaking. It produces strategic analyses, policy briefs, and advisory recommendations aimed at decision-makers at both local and national levels. It also convenes conferences, seminars, and capacity-building workshops in partnership with national and international organizations specializing in peace and security.
Through these efforts, the peacebuilding studies department aspires to serve as a leading national hub for peacebuilding research in Iraq and to contribute to the development of a distinctly Iraqi model of peace studies one that reflects local experience while engaging with global best practices thereby reinforcing the role of the University of Anbar as a key academic institution supporting stability and sustainable development.
